Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Might Solve This

As any significant awards ceremony draws close, you'll find an outcry for introducing of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include classifications covering Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types actually cover many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching of another game, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most engaged experiences globally and have been for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary game development, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
