Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
No fewer than 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Despite the disruption, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout the continent.
